Athens Itineraries: From a Weekend to a Full Week
How you spend your time in Athens depends on how long you have and what you prioritize. These itineraries are starting points — frameworks that can be adapted based on your pace, interests, and the weather.
2 days in Athens
Day one: Start early at the Acropolis (arrive by 8am to beat both the crowds and the heat). Allow 2 hours on the Rock, then descend to the Acropolis Museum for another 2 hours. Lunch in Koukaki or Monastiraki, then the Ancient Agora in the afternoon. Sunset from a Monastiraki rooftop bar. Dinner in Psiri.
Day two: Morning at the National Archaeological Museum (allow 3 hours). Lunch in Exarchia. Afternoon walk through Monastiraki, the flea market, and Plaka’s upper lanes. Late afternoon coffee in Kolonaki. Dinner at a neighborhood taverna in Koukaki or Pangrati.
4 days in Athens
Days one and two: as above. Day three: morning at the Benaki Museum and Museum of Cycladic Art (both in Kolonaki). Lunch in Kolonaki. Afternoon: Lycabettus funicular for sunset views. Day four: day trip — either Cape Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon, or a ferry to Hydra for a car-free island day. Return to Athens for a final dinner at one of the city’s better restaurants.
7 days in Athens
Seven days allows the full Athens experience plus meaningful excursions. Days 1–2: as the 2-day itinerary. Day 3: Benaki and Cycladic Art museums. Day 4: Athens Riviera — drive or bus the coastal road to Vouliagmeni for a beach afternoon and fish dinner. Day 5: Day trip to Delphi (full day, hire a car or join a tour). Day 6: Hydra by ferry from Piraeus. Day 7: Monastiraki flea market on Sunday morning, a cooking class or food tour in the afternoon, and a final dinner at a restaurant you’ve been eyeing all week.
