The best day trip is not necessarily the most famous one. From Athens, you can reach the coast, a Saronic island or major archaeological sites, but distances vary enormously. Count the door-to-door travel, not just the advertised journey time.

Cape Sounion — a half-day or longer
The Temple of Poseidon stands above the sea at the southern tip of Attica. It can be reached by car, regional bus or organised excursion. It is a good choice for visitors who want an archaeological site and coastal views without spending a whole day far from Athens. The official operator lists travel by KTEL bus at around two hours and by car at approximately 65 minutes; traffic can change both.

Aegina — an island without an overnight stay

Aegina is one of the practical choices for a day trip from Piraeus. Ferry journeys and arrival ports vary by vessel and operator. Once there, choose between the main town, archaeological interests and a quieter coastal plan rather than assuming you can cover the whole island on foot.
Delphi — a full day
Delphi offers the sanctuary of Apollo and an important archaeological museum in a mountain setting. It requires a long return journey from Athens. Leave early, check bus departures carefully and give enough time to visit the museum as well as the site.
Nafplio and Mycenae — a long archaeological day
Nafplio is a historic waterfront town in the Peloponnese; Mycenae adds Bronze Age archaeology. Combining them can work with a car or an organised itinerary, but public transport connections and opening times need careful coordination. If you want to linger in Nafplio, consider staying overnight.
Hydra and Poros — good with the right ferry
Both can be visited from Athens, but the published sailing timetable determines whether a day trip is worthwhile. Hydra’s harbour and car-free settlement offer an attractive walk; do not assume ferries run at equal frequency throughout the year.
Skip the rushed option: Meteora is usually too far from Athens for a relaxed there-and-back day. An overnight trip is much more sensible if you want time at the monasteries.
