Athens Cooking Classes: Learning Greek Cuisine
A cooking class in Athens is one of the more rewarding ways to engage with Greek food culture — not just eating the food but understanding the ingredients, techniques, and regional traditions that define Greek cuisine. The best classes start at the market.
What to expect
Most Athens cooking classes run for 3–5 hours and include a visit to the Varvakios Central Market to shop for ingredients, followed by a session preparing a menu of 4–6 dishes and eating the results. Typical dishes include fresh tzatziki, spanakopita from scratch, moussaka, grilled fish with lemon and herbs, and at least one dessert — often loukoumades or a honey-based sweet.
Classes are generally small (6–12 people) and held either in a professional kitchen space or in a private home kitchen, which tends to be a more relaxed experience. Greek wine is typically included with the meal at the end.
Booking
Cooking classes can be booked directly through Athens cooking schools or via GetYourGuide and Viator, which aggregate options and handle reviews. Prices range from €60–120 per person. Morning classes that start at the market are preferable — the Varvakios is at its best before noon and provides excellent context for the cooking session that follows.
