The essentials are easier to manage in the right order: choose your dates, decide where to stay, work out your airport journey, then build the days around the places you want to see. Start here rather than piecing together answers from unrelated articles.

Before you book
The busiest weeks for the main sites are generally in late spring, summer and early autumn. July and August can be very hot, especially on exposed archaeological sites. If outdoor walking matters more than the beach, consider spring or autumn. See the month-by-month guide.

For a first trip, Plaka, Syntagma, Koukaki and Monastiraki make particularly convenient bases for walking; each has different trade-offs. Compare where to stay before choosing accommodation.
Before you fly

Check the airport transfer that serves your area. Metro Line 3 reaches Syntagma and Monastiraki; the X95 express bus terminates at Syntagma, and the X96 connects the airport with Piraeus. There are separate fares for airport services. See Getting to Athens and the airport-to-centre guide.
Book the Acropolis for your intended date and time via the official ticket service, and remember that the Acropolis Museum requires its own admission. Other archaeological sites should not be assumed to be covered by an Acropolis ticket.
Once you arrive
Use walking for short trips in the historic centre and the metro for longer journeys. A standard 90-minute city ticket costs €1.20 at the time of this review; airport travel is excluded. See tickets and transport.
Download your accommodation details offline, carry water when visiting open sites, and check for changed museum hours on public holidays. Our itineraries organise activities into sensible geographical groups rather than cramming every attraction into one day.
