Athens Walking Routes: Four Self-Guided Walks

These routes keep nearby places together. Walking times vary with stops, weather and personal pace; allow considerably longer if entering museums or archaeological sites.

Walk 1: Ancient Athens — roughly 2–3 hours without site entry

Start at Acropoli Metro and walk along Dionysiou Areopagitou towards the Odeon of Herodes Atticus viewpoint. Continue via the pedestrian route around the Acropolis towards Apostolou Pavlou, Thissio and Monastiraki. Add the Acropolis or Ancient Agora only if you have allocated separate visiting time and tickets. Some slopes and surfaces are uneven.

Walk 2: Plaka and Anafiotika — roughly 1–2 hours

Start at Monastiraki Square, walk towards the Roman Agora, then enter the smaller streets of Plaka. Continue uphill to the lanes around Anafiotika where public access is permitted, before finishing near Acropoli station. Expect steps and narrow lanes; respect homes and private entrances.

Walk 3: Syntagma to Pangrati — roughly 1.5–2.5 hours

Start at Syntagma Square, walk through the National Garden and visit the Panathenaic Stadium area. Continue east into Pangrati, then choose a return by local transport or on foot. This route gives a gentler mix of parks, modern streets and Olympic history.

Walk 4: Museums and Kolonaki — roughly 1.5–3 hours

Start near Syntagma, follow Vasilissis Sofias Avenue to the Benaki Museum and Museum of Cycladic Art, then walk through Kolonaki. For a longer and much steeper extension, head towards the lower slopes of Lycabettus. Check museum opening days before planning indoor stops.

Before setting out

Save your route offline, carry water in warm weather and adjust for mobility needs. These walks are ideas for exploring, not guaranteed step-free paths. For public transport connections, check OASA.
