Three Days in Athens: A Balanced Itinerary

Three full days let you see the most important historic sites without spending every hour in a queue or on a metro train. This plan keeps each day geographically sensible and leaves time for the things you notice along the way.

Day 1 — the Acropolis and the southern district

Morning: Enter the Acropolis at your booked time and allow about two hours. Follow the site’s permitted route through the Propylaea, Parthenon and Erechtheion viewpoints.

Midday: Visit the Acropolis Museum. If the weather is hot, this is a good indoor pause. It needs a separate ticket.

Later: Walk along Dionysiou Areopagitou towards the Filopappou paths, or explore Koukaki if you prefer a level neighbourhood outing. In summer, avoid exposed climbs during the hottest hours.

Day 2 — the Ancient Agora and the old streets

Morning: Enter the Ancient Agora and visit the Temple of Hephaestus and Stoa of Attalos. Allocate at least 60–90 minutes.

Midday: Explore Monastiraki, then walk into Plaka past the Roman Agora area. You do not need to enter every archaeological site to enjoy the walk.

Later: Move towards Syntagma via the historic centre or continue through Psiri for a more contemporary city feel. Avoid a long cross-town detour just to tick off another viewpoint.

Day 3 — choose one theme

Museums: Spend the morning at the National Archaeological Museum, then visit Kolonaki and a smaller collection such as the Benaki or Cycladic Art Museum.

Coast: Take public transport to a specific beach or promenade along the Athens Riviera. Check facilities, transport connections and whether the beach is free or organised before setting out.

Excursion: Choose Cape Sounion for the Temple of Poseidon and coastline, or Aegina for an island day. Both require a separate transport plan and may occupy most of the day.

What to book first

Reserve the Acropolis slot, confirm opening times for your museums and choose accommodation based on where your days begin and end. If a holiday or extreme weather affects access, switch the order instead of rushing.
