Best Areas to Stay in Athens by Neighborhood
Choosing where to stay in Athens is largely a question of what kind of city experience you’re after. Each neighborhood offers different proximity to the sights, a different character underfoot, and a different price level.
Syntagma and Plaka
Staying at or near Syntagma Square puts you at the geographic and transport center of the city — the Metro intersection of Lines 2 and 3, within walking distance of every major central sight. Hotels here range from the iconic Grande Bretagne and King George to mid-range options on the surrounding streets. Plaka, immediately to the south, offers smaller boutique hotels in more atmospheric settings — some with Acropolis-facing rooms that justify a premium.
Monastiraki and Psiri
For travelers who want to be in the thick of it — rooftop bars overhead, the flea market outside the door, the Ancient Agora a short walk away — Monastiraki is the right choice. Hotels here include some excellent boutique options in converted neoclassical buildings. Noise is a consideration; ask for rooms facing the interior courtyard if you’re a light sleeper.
Koukaki
Koukaki has become one of the most appealing neighborhoods to base yourself — genuinely residential, strong on independent cafes and restaurants, with the Acropolis Museum a ten-minute walk away. The neighborhood has several excellent hotels that offer better value than comparable properties in the tourist core, and a more authentic daily experience.
Kolonaki
Kolonaki is best for travelers who prioritize elegant surroundings and proximity to the Benaki, the Museum of Cycladic Art, and the Lycabettus funicular over walking distance to the ancient sites. The neighborhood is served by the Evangelismos Metro station and has some of the city’s finest boutique and luxury properties.
