Athens is among the more affordable European capitals for accommodation, and a carefully chosen budget hotel or hostel in the right location can be an excellent base for the city. The key is not sacrificing location for price — a cheap room far from the center wastes time and money on transport.

Several solid budget hotels operate in Monastiraki, Omonia, and the streets north of Syntagma — properties with clean rooms, air conditioning, and basic breakfast, priced at €40–70 per night for a double in shoulder season. The Athenian Callirhoe area (Koukaki/Syngrou boundary) has a cluster of mid-budget properties close to the Acropolis Museum.

For the most budget-conscious travelers, Athens has several well-regarded hostels — including Athens Backpackers (Makrygianni) and the City Circus (Omonia), both with private rooms available alongside dorms.

Practical tips

Omonoia Square area hotels are the cheapest in the center but the neighborhood requires some tolerance for noise and urban roughness. Monastiraki is a better budget base — similar price points but a more appealing immediate environment.
