Which is the Currency used in Athens?

Which is the currency used in Athens? Greece is a member of the eurozone, the group of EU countries that use Euro (€).

So, in Athens you are going to use Euros. One Euro is divided in 100 cents. In Greek (though Euro as a word is understandable) Euro is called Evro (Ευρώ) and Cent is called Lepto (Λεπτό). Plurals are Evro (Euros) and Lepta (Cents).

Drachma was used in Greece for thousands of years before it was replaced in 2001 by Euro.

How do I cancel my Credit Card?

If you lost your Credit Card or if it was stolen then you should directly call the customer service of your Credit Card company and ask to cancel it!

The numbers to call and cancel your credit card if you have lost it in Athens or elsewhere in Greece, are:

  • if you have lost your Visa Card then you should call Visa Europe at 00-800-11-638-0304
  • if you have lost your MasterCard then you should call MasterCard at 00-800-11-887-0303
  • if you have lost your American Express Card then you should call Alpha Bank (they represent AmEx) at (+30) 210-326-0000

You can also ask them to issue a new card and send it to your hotel or your new destination!

Do I need an electricity adapter in Athens?

Probably yes...  Greeks use the European Style two pin sockets and electricity comes at 220V, 50 Hz AC.  So, if in your country you use different plugs then you 'll definetely need to get some power adapter with you.  Most hotels in Athens will provide you with an adapter if you ask for it, but usually one is not enough.  Of course you can still buy one at the electricity shops of the touristic areas or at the airport.  Also, if you live in a country with 110 V do not forget that you will also need a power transformer to 220V.
