Athens becomes easier once you stop treating every attraction as a separate trip.
Its central neighbourhoods connect on foot, the metro handles longer distances,
and many of the best views cost nothing.

## What to book before travelling

Book a timed Acropolis entry for busy dates, especially if you want an early visit.
Check whether your chosen date is a public holiday, when museums may change hours.
If you have a tight onward ferry connection, confirm the actual departure port and
terminal — not just the island.

## On your first morning

Begin with one area. A good first-day circuit is Acropolis → Acropolis Museum →
pedestrian walkway towards Filopappou → Plaka or Koukaki. Another is Syntagma →
National Garden → Panathenaic Stadium → Pangrati. Mixing those two circuits with
Piraeus and the beach would create a frustrating day of travel.

## Small things that save time

Wear shoes with grip at archaeological sites: marble can be slippery even in dry
weather. Carry water and plan shade during hot months. Keep valuables secure on
crowded trains and around busy transport hubs. Have the name and address of your
accommodation saved offline, including its Greek street name if available.

Do not rely on Google-style walking estimates alone for accessibility. Historic
parts of Plaka and Anafiotika have stairs, inclines and uneven paving, and some
attractions have separate accessible entrance arrangements.

## Plan around your interests, not a checklist

If you love history, use time for the Agora and the National Archaeological Museum
rather than adding an unrelated activity. If you want to experience the living city,
spend an unhurried afternoon in Koukaki, Pangrati or Kolonaki. With children, use
shorter segments and combine archaeology with park time. See our [neighbourhoods](https://www.traveltoathens.eu/travel-to-athens/neighborhoods/)
