Athens is a natural starting point for the Greek islands, but the ferry network
is not a single route map. The destination, travel date and type of vessel determine
which port you use and whether your journey is suitable for a day trip.

## The three ports to know

**Piraeus** is the main harbour and the most convenient for many island routes,
with metro access from central Athens. **Rafina** lies east of Athens and can be
useful for some Cycladic routes. **Lavrio** is farther southeast and serves other
connections. Always follow the departure port shown on the booking confirmation:
a ticket from Rafina cannot be used to board at Piraeus.

## Aegina, Hydra and Poros

These Saronic islands are often easier to combine with Athens than the farther Cyclades.
Aegina is convenient for a straightforward island day, Hydra is appealing for its
harbour settlement without ordinary private cars, and Poros combines a waterfront
town with nearby scenery. Seasonal ferry times vary; check the last return sailing
before buying an outward ticket.

## The Cyclades

For islands such as Paros, Naxos or Mykonos, a ferry trip can be a substantial travel
day in itself. High-speed and conventional ferries offer different durations, prices
and weather sensitivities. For a first Greek island trip, avoid trying to visit
multiple islands in a few days simply because the map makes them look close.

## Booking without surprises

Check the operator, port, boarding gate, luggage rules and whether a vehicle ticket
is needed. Arrive early enough for the specific operator’s boarding procedure. Strong
winds can delay or cancel sailings, so avoid a tight ferry-to-international-flight
connection on separate tickets.

## Before committing

Compare a day trip with staying one or two nights. The extra night can be worth
more than a rushed return ferry, especially outside peak season when departure choices
may be limited. Our [day-trip guide](https://www.traveltoathens.eu/travel-to-athens/experiences/day-trips/)

TAKE ATHENS BEYOND THE CENTRE

## Add the coast, sunset or a day trip.

The city works best when you mix the headline sights with slower experiences, coastal
time and one or two well-chosen excursions.
