Athens Rooftop Bars: Drinks on Top of the City
Athens is exceptional for rooftop bars. The density of flat-roof buildings across the center, combined with the Acropolis rising above them all, creates bar settings that are genuinely extraordinary. In the right spot at the right hour, a simple gin and tonic becomes an event.
The best areas
Monastiraki has the highest concentration of well-positioned rooftop bars and the most direct Acropolis sightlines. A for Athens on Miaouli Street and several adjacent hotels have opened their rooftops to the public. The views from around 7–9pm in summer are exceptional.
The Kolonaki rooftops tend to offer Lycabettus views rather than Acropolis views — a different perspective, particularly beautiful at dusk when the city lights begin to come on. The roof of the Hotel Grande Bretagne at Syntagma offers one of the most elegant bar settings in the city.
What to drink
Most rooftop bars serve a full cocktail menu alongside wine and spirits. Greek gin (several quality producers have emerged in recent years) with tonic and fresh herbs is a good choice. Greek wine by the glass is variable — if you want reliable quality, stick to an Assyrtiko white from Santorini or a Xinomavro red from northern Greece.
Practical tips
Arrive before 8pm in summer to secure a good position; the best spots fill quickly. Prices are significantly higher than ground-level bars — €12–16 for a cocktail is typical. Reservations are possible and advisable at the most popular spots during July and August.
