Best Time to Visit Athens
Athens has a Mediterranean climate — hot, dry summers and mild, sometimes wet winters. The best time to visit depends on what you want: near-perfect weather with manageable crowds (spring and autumn), maximum beach and outdoor life (summer), or quiet streets and low prices (winter).
April and May
April and May are widely considered the optimal months for Athens. Temperatures are warm but not oppressive (18–25°C), wildflowers cover the hillsides, the light has a quality that’s difficult to find at other times of year, and the monuments are significantly less crowded than in summer. Easter in Athens (date varies; typically April) is a particularly atmospheric time — the midnight resurrection service at the major churches, followed by fireworks and lamb on the spit, is one of Greece’s most celebrated traditions.
June to August
Summer in Athens is hot — consistently above 30°C in July and August, with periods over 35°C. The city is at its busiest, accommodation prices are at their peak, and the ancient sites are significantly more crowded. That said, Athens in summer has its own energy: the Herodion festival (ancient theatre performances in the Odeon of Herodes Atticus), outdoor cinema screenings, long evenings on rooftops, and the Athens Riviera beaches are all at their peak. The heat is manageable if you visit the outdoor sites early and late, and spend midday in museums or cafes.
September and October
September and early October are arguably the best months to visit — summer heat moderated to comfortable levels (24–28°C in September), crowds significantly reduced from August peak, and prices dropping. The sea is warm enough to swim well into October. Autumn is the best time for the Riviera, when the coastal towns return to a quieter rhythm after the summer tourist influx.
November to March
Athens in winter is mild compared to Northern Europe (8–15°C) but can be rainy and grey. The city is at its quietest and most affordable. The major sites are easier to visit without crowds. The Plaka restaurants and central cafes are warm and atmospheric. If your priority is monuments and museums rather than outdoor life, winter offers the most relaxed access to everything.
