Athens Coffee Culture

Athens Coffee: A City Powered by the Cup

Athens runs on coffee. The Greek café tradition is one of the defining features of city life here — coffee is not a transaction but an occasion, stretched over conversation for as long as the table is needed. Understanding the coffee culture, and knowing what to order, makes the city more legible.

The drinks

The freddo espresso is the standard summer drink — double espresso shaken cold over ice, served in a small glass with froth on top. The freddo cappuccino adds cold frothed milk. In winter, hot espresso and cappuccino dominate, though many Athenians drink cold coffee year-round regardless of temperature.

The Greek frappé — instant Nescafé shaken with water and ice — remains an institution and is the drink of long summer afternoons on terraces. It’s not fashionable but it’s deeply Athenian. For a traditional Greek coffee experience, the briki (small copper pot) preparation produces an intensely flavored, unfiltered coffee drunk slowly while the grounds settle.

Where to go

The best independent cafes are in Koukaki, Kolonaki, and Pangrati — neighborhoods where the coffee culture is aimed at residents rather than tourists. Exarchia has excellent, cheap cafes with a bohemian atmosphere. Monastiraki and Plaka have cafes but the prices reflect the location rather than the quality. Kolonaki’s long café terraces on Skoufa and Tsakalof Streets are among the best for a long, slow coffee-and-people-watching session.
