Day Trips from Athens: The Best Excursions
Athens sits at the center of Attica, with excellent access to some of Greece’s most significant sites and island destinations. These day trips are practical additions to a city itinerary, ranging from a half-day to the coast to a full day at the Oracle of Delphi.
Cape Sounion
The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion (70km south) is the most popular and accessible day trip from Athens. The cliff-top temple dates from 444 BC and sits above the sea with extraordinary views across to the islands. The drive along the coastal road is beautiful. Allow 2–3 hours at the site including the short walk to the promontory and a meal at one of the tavernas in the village below. Easily combined with a stop on the Athens Riviera on the return.
Delphi
The sanctuary of Apollo at Delphi (180km north) was considered the navel of the world in antiquity — the site of the most important oracle in the Greek world. The archaeological site and museum together require a full day, including the 2.5-hour drive each way through beautiful mountain scenery. Organized tours depart Athens daily; driving independently gives more flexibility.
Saronic Islands: Hydra, Aegina, Poros
The Saronic Islands are reachable by high-speed ferry from Piraeus in 40 minutes (Aegina), 90 minutes (Poros), or 90 minutes to 2 hours (Hydra). Hydra — car-free, architecturally intact, extraordinarily beautiful — is the finest day trip from Athens and worth a full day or overnight stay. Aegina has the Temple of Aphaia, a well-preserved Doric temple, and the island’s pistachio harvest is famous across Greece. All three have direct ferry connections from Piraeus throughout the day.
Ancient Corinth
Ancient Corinth (80km west) includes excavations of the Roman city, the Temple of Apollo (one of the oldest standing Doric temples in Greece), and the museum housing finds from the site. The drive crosses the Corinth Canal — worth a stop to look down into the extraordinary engineering cut through the isthmus. Allow a full day including both Ancient and Modern Corinth.
